UpCountry

That's what the area and town are called up the slopes of the Haleakala volcano are called. We stayed last night in a Bed and Breakfast (The Upcountry) run by a Vietnam era submariner. We had an amazing view of the sun setting last night over West Maui and the sky erupted in pink and blues and the sun rose behind us this morning.

After landing yesterday we took a quick trip to Ioa State Park to walk around a bit and stretch our legs in order to ward off the impending jet lag. We were greeted by some spectacular views in a Canyon where once thousands of Hawaiians were slaughtered. The stream flowed red and the name the place still has mean 'cursed.' You'd never have known any of that were it not for the interpretive signs. The place is green and lush a beautiful. With enough time nature, can cover over even the worst of man atrocities. The centerpiece of the park is the Ioa Needle. It's a formation that stretches up straight out of the canyon.

Today were ziplining at 10:30am then heading on "up" to our campsite at around 8500 feet. We'll get set up, spend the night, and then wake for the sunrise and head down into the crater (which turns out isn't actually a crater, but rather an eroded valley). We'll spent Mon night in our cabin, then hike back out on Tuesday. I don't think the cabin has DSL, so I won't likely be able to post until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Aloha for now!
